AEO in Southampton: when a passenger or a student asks an assistant, be the answer

A cruise passenger on the terminal Wi-Fi asks ChatGPT where to eat before boarding. A student asks it for a dentist near Highfield. A boat owner asks Google who can service a Yanmar on the Hamble and an AI Overview answers before the map. The businesses named are not the biggest; they are the ones whose profile, reviews and pages agree with each other, name the centre, and answer the question plainly. Answer engine optimisation is the discipline of being that business, and it is built into every tier we sell.

Three people, three prompts

What the assistant does with a Southampton question

The passenger

"Where can we get lunch near the Ocean Terminal before we board?"

Reads the profiles for opening hours and distance from the terminal, prefers venues whose pages show a menu with prices and mention the port, names the ones open at that hour.

The student

"Is there a dentist near Highfield that takes new patients?"

Looks for practices whose pages say Highfield or Portswood, whether they are accepting patients, and reviews from the last few months. A practice with no page on new patients is skipped.

The boat owner

"Who can service a Yanmar engine on the Hamble?"

Looks for pages that name the make and the water, the certifications as text, the marina directories, and reviews that mention the boat.

One page, before and after

The same dentist's page, rewritten for a machine that quotes

A worked example of the shape, not a client's page. The same rewrite applies to a boatyard, a cafe or a plumber: the answer first, the centre named, the questions answered, the markup matching the profile.

Where the assistant reads

Four sources, and the one most Southampton businesses neglect

The Google profile, your own pages, reviews with words in them, and the registers and directories that mention you: the CQC and professional registers for a clinic, the marina directories for a marine firm, the trade registers for a trade, the university's and the port's own listings where they exist. The profile is the most cited and the most neglected. When all four agree about your name, address and hours, the assistant trusts you; when they disagree, it names someone else.

The profile side of this is the local SEO page; the pages side is the SEO page.

Measured monthly

Twenty prompts a customer in your centre would use for your trade, run through ChatGPT, Google and Perplexity, recorded in a table: named or not, which page was cited, what changed since last month. It sits in the same report as Search Console, so you see the map, the results and the assistants side by side.

Questions Southampton businesses ask us

Who in Southampton actually asks an assistant?

Passengers on the terminal Wi-Fi, students who arrived in September with nobody to ask, and anyone Google answers with an AI Overview before the map, which is a growing share of local searches. Small next to the map today; the fastest-growing door by a distance.

Does the centre matter to a machine?

More than to a person. Ask for a dentist near Highfield and the assistant looks for pages and reviews that say Highfield or Portswood. A practice that says only Southampton is not on the shortlist, however good it is.

What is the single biggest fix?

The first paragraph. On most Southampton business pages the answer to the visitor's question arrives in the fourth paragraph, after a welcome and a paragraph about values. Assistants quote first paragraphs. Move the answer up and half the work is done.

Do reviews count for an assistant?

Reviews with words in them count; stars alone do not. "Sorted our boiler in Shirley the same day" can be quoted. Five stars with no text cannot.

How do you know whether it is working?

Twenty prompts a customer in your centre would use, run through ChatGPT, Google and Perplexity every month, recorded in a table: named or not, which page was cited, what changed. It sits in the same report as Search Console.

Is AEO charged separately?

No. It is the same profile, pages and mentions held to a stricter standard, so it is inside every tier. This page exists so you can see the standard and check your own pages against it.
