Local SEO in Southampton: a map that follows the phone, three slots per centre

Southampton stretches eight miles from the docks to the forest and the Itchen cuts it in two. A search from Ocean Village, from Shirley and from Bitterne gets three different map packs, and Eastleigh, Totton and Hedge End get their own again. For a plumber, a dentist, a restaurant or a boatyard, the map in your centre decides more work than the rest of the page. This is the service that builds the profile properly, keeps it right every month, and gives Google the reviews and mentions that make it choose you.

The three signals

Relevance, distance, prominence, and which one you can move this week

Relevance: this week

Is your primary category the thing being searched? A "dentist" profile does not show for "emergency dentist Southampton"; a profile with the emergency service ticked does. Categories, services and the description are fixed in a fortnight, and this is where most Southampton profiles are losing.

Rebuilt in week two.

Distance: fixed by geography

The map centres on the searcher. Someone in Woolston sees Woolston and Bitterne businesses; someone in Bassett sees Bassett and Portswood. You cannot move your address, but the service area and the pages tell Google where you work.

Service area matched to the real one; centres named on the areas page.

Prominence: over months

Reviews, their pace and their replies; mentions of the business on other Southampton sites; the website behind the profile. The part that takes months and the part competitors cannot copy in a weekend.

Review routine every job; mentions every month; pages that earn links.

The centres

Where the Southampton map centres, and what each one sells

The profile wins the centre its address is in. Everything else is earned by the service area, the pages and the reviews, one centre at a time.

Ocean Village and the waterfront
Restaurants, bars, marine services, the cruise-terminal trade: taxis, hotels, parking.
Bedford Place and the centre
Nightlife, professional firms, the retail core; the student searches from the university end.
Portswood, Highfield and Bassett
Clinics, dentists, letting agents, the university and hospital crowd.
Shirley and Millbrook
The family trades and the high street; a strong map of its own.
Bitterne, Woolston and Sholing
Across the Itchen: home services, garages, the trades' bread and butter.
Eastleigh, Totton and Hedge End
Outside the city line: separate maps, separate competition, a page each where you really work there.

The towns outside

Five miles is a different map

Eastleigh, Totton and Hedge End sit just outside the city, each with its own map and its own competition. A Southampton profile does not appear on them however good it is, because distance is a hard rule. What appears is the result under the map: a page that says you take work in that town and how you get there. We build it only for businesses that genuinely go, and never pretend a Southampton address is an Eastleigh one.

Questions Southampton businesses ask us

Why does the map show different businesses in Shirley and Bitterne?

Because it centres on the phone, and the Itchen is a real boundary. A search from Shirley High Street and a search from Bitterne Precinct are two different maps with two different top threes. Your profile wins the centre your address is in first; the service area and the pages decide how far beyond it you show.

I am in Portswood but I work across the city. What does the profile say?

The address stays where you are. The service area lists the centres you actually go to, in the words people use: Portswood, Highfield, Bassett, Shirley, Bitterne, Woolston, then Eastleigh and Totton if you cross the city line. A trade working from a van hides the address and shows the area; a clinic or a restaurant keeps the pin.

Do I need a separate profile for Eastleigh?

Only if you have a real second base there, staffed, with signage. A second profile at a friend's address is the fastest way to lose both. For a business that travels, one profile with an honest service area and one page per town is the right set-up.

Will one bad review sink me?

No. A profile with sixty reviews and one two-star review with a calm reply looks more trustworthy than five perfect ones. Silence sinks profiles: no replies, no new reviews for a year, photos from another decade.

Can you get the profile verified?

Yes. Video verification is normal now. We prepare the walk-through (signage, the inside, proof of the address) so it passes first time.

Is this different from the £200 profile build?

The one-off build is the profile done properly once. Local SEO is the profile kept right every month plus the pages, reviews and mentions that make it rank in a crowded centre. Most Southampton businesses start with the build and move to the retainer when the map starts sending work.
