How much should a Southampton business spend on SEO? Start from the enquiry

Work backwards from what one enquiry is worth to your business, then the three answers for a trade, a practice and a marine firm.

The wrong way to set an SEO budget is to start from a number that feels affordable. The right way is to start from what one enquiry is worth to you and how many the search doors could send, then decide whether the work that wins them is worth the price. For most Southampton businesses that arithmetic points to one of three answers, and this guide walks through them without pretending there is a single right figure.

Start from the enquiry, not the budget

A boiler repair is worth one job. A conveyancing matter is worth a fee and, often, a client for life. A berth or a season's engine servicing is worth a year. Write down what a typical new customer is worth to you over a year, then how many of them you would need to justify a month's SEO. For a trade it is usually two or three jobs a month; for a practice or a firm, one client; for a marine business, one owner who stays. Then the question is not whether SEO is expensive but whether the search doors can send that many, and the audit answers it from the searches people in your centre actually make.

Three businesses, three answers

The trade

A plumber, electrician or roofer lives on the map, and the map is won by the profile and the reviews more than by the site. The right spend is the smallest tier that gets the profile done and the review routine running, with a page per service on the site over the first year. The mistake is paying for pages before the profile is right.

The practice or the firm

A dentist, a physio, a solicitor or an accountant is chosen in the results and confirmed on the map. The right spend is the tier that writes a page a month, because the pages are the product: a fee page, a specialism page, a new-patient page. The mistake is a beautiful site with three pages and a retainer spent on the profile alone.

The marine firm

A boatyard, a rigger or an engineer is found by the make, the water and the season. The right spend is front-loaded: the pages by make and water before the spring, the directories, the profile at the yard, then a lighter month-to-month through the summer. The mistake is a flat retainer that does the same thing in December as in March.

What is cheap and what is dear

  • Cheap: finishing the profile, which is free and decides the map.
  • Cheap: a review routine, which costs ten minutes a week and compounds.
  • Cheap: a page written from a conversation with you, once, that ranks for years.
  • Dear: Google Ads for browsing searches, which pay per click for people who were not ready.
  • Dear: a retainer with no list of work and no figures, which pays for a relationship.
  • Dearest: a profile or a site in someone else's account, which you pay to build and then pay again to leave.

The cost of waiting

Search rewards time in the market: reviews accumulate, pages age into trust, the profile's history lengthens. A competitor who started the routine a year ago has a lead that money cannot buy back quickly. That is the honest case for starting small now rather than starting big later, and it is also the honest case for stopping once the position is held: a business whose map and pages are settled can drop to a yearly profile check and a small care plan.

Ask any quote one question: what would I still own if I stopped after a year? A profile in my account, a site on my domain, and reports I can read is the right answer. Anything else is rent.

Questions on this topic

Is SEO in Southampton dearer than in the towns around it?

The work costs the same. The results take longer in the city centre because more businesses compete, which is why we start most trades in Eastleigh, Totton and Hedge End and work inwards. The towns are cheaper per enquiry, not cheaper per month.

What does the audit cost?

Nothing. It reads your profile, your site, your reviews and the three businesses above you, and comes back with a recommendation and a fixed price. Sometimes the recommendation is to spend nothing yet.

Can I pay for a website over time?

Half at the start and half at launch is usual. Spreading a build across the first year alongside a tier is possible; say so on the quote form.
